developed online newspaper to give my Journalism students experience
Teaching sections of Journalism I and II at Suffolk University in Boston, I wanted students to learn confidence and skills in online publishing through the use of an online newspaper, the Suffolk Scoop, created in a WordPress template.
Students worked through drafts of articles, served as peer editors, and found artwork to accompany their stories. They learned how to post stories, work with text and images, and become comfortable with the tools and features of the blog.
The Suffolk Scoop was an effective mechanism to teach journalism, exemplifying how the field is changing and the skills and awareness needed to compete in the industry today.
Students were able to present their work to the public, see their bylines, respond to readers commenting on their articles, and practice thinking visually about storytelling.
